First Day of School Tips

  • If possible, visit the classroom prior to the first day and meet the teacher.
  • Begin the "going to bed/getting up routine" a week prior to the start of school.
  • Make sure your child has a good breakfast.
  • Be sure that your child wears an identification tag with the following information: first and last name, school name, teacher, student number, and the way that they get home from school.
  • Discuss arrangements for dismissal with your child so that they are prepared. Find out if there are any special dismissal procedures from your child's teacher. It is important to have a regular routine.
  • If you haven't already, alert your child of the dangers of strangers and drugs.
  • Teach your child bus safety rules, such as stay seated, talk in a soft voice, know the bus number and bus stop. It may also be helpful to know another child who will be riding the same bus.
  • Label all personal belongings with your child's name.
  • Make sure that your child is dressed in clothing that they can manage independently.
  • Label any money that your child takes to school with your child's name, teacher, and what the money is for.
  • Ask your child questions about their day at school.
  • Ask your child's teacher about school supplies before you buy them. They may already be provided.
  • Kindergarten is an exciting time for you and your child. I understand that you may want to come with your child into the classroom everyday, but please understand that this may make it harder for the child. Separation anxiety is common among kindergarteners and is often prolonged when parents are present. If your child experiences anxiety, the best thing for the child is to allow them to be as independent as possible. They usually stop crying when the parents leave.
  • Keep a positive attitude. If you look forward to the first day of school, your child will too.
