Math

Not only are the knowledge of numbers and counting important in Pre-K and kindergarten, but also problem solving and thinking mathematically. Children need to see relationships between numbers, recognize shapes, make graphs, and discover that patterns are everywhere. They will be expected to apply this knowledge from one area to another. With young children, it is most important that they are given hands-on experiences.  Therefore we will be touching many types of materials as we count, sort, manipulate, measure, and pattern.

Ideas for Enrichment

-Involve your child in the purchase of a simple item. Have them count the money and verify the change.

-Count coins with your child and find different ways to show the same amount.

-Work with your child on telling time to the half hour and fifteen minute intervals. Help them with future and elapsed time.

-Make up story problems. Have your child write the problem and illustrate it.

-Involve your child in the cooking of simple recipes. Use and discuss measurement as you cook. Use terms such as heavier, lighter, more, and less.

-In the kitchen count Cheerios and sort into groups of 2, 5, 10, etc. Practice skip counting the sorted groups of cereal.
